SUMMARY:Helen Thorpe
DESCRIPTION:Woman's City Club of Greater Cincinnati invites the community to hear\n\nAcclaimed author of The Newcomers: Helen Thorpe\n\nAt our 26th National Speaker Forum and Fundraiser\n\n\n\n"Searching for Refuge\, Friendship\, and Hope:\n\nPerspectives on Immigration What Does it Mean to 'Be American' Today?"\n\n\n\nWednesday\, April 3\, 2019\, 7:00 pm\n\nMemorial Hall\, 1225 Elm St.\, Over-the-Rhine\n\n\n\nHelen Thorpe will explore what it means to "be American" as she presents her perspectives on the issues of immigration\, multiculturalism\, and America's role on the global stage. In a country riven by these issues\, her talk is both timely and relevant. And with a growing number of immigrants and refugees making their home in Greater Cincinnati\, her presentation will be of strong interest to our community.\n\n\n\nMs. Thorpe speaks from her experience with on-site research and writing\, as well as observation of the impact of large scale immigration on the life and culture of Denver and Colorado\, where she lives. She has authored two acclaimed works of narrative nonfiction that document in a human and intimate way the lives of young immigrants and refugees in Denver.\n\n\n\nJust Like us (2011) is the heartbreaking story about four girls from Mexico\, two who gained citizenship and two who cannot.\n\n\n\nThe Newcomers: Finding Refuge\, Friendship\, and Hope in an American Classroom (2017) follows the lives of 22 teenage refugees from Latin America and around the world during their first school year in a welcoming ESL class in a Denver high school\, with their back stories and continuing challenges. Collectively\, their class represents a microcosm of the global refugee crisis. As a NewYork Times reviewer wrote\, "Thorpe's book is a reminder that in an era of nativism\, some Americans are still breaking down walls and nurturing newcomers\, the seeds of the great American experiment."\n\n\n\nThe Woman's City Club is a leading civic organization that promotes justice\, civic reform\, and citizen engagement through education\, advocacy\, and service. More information at womanscityclub.org.\n\n\n\nTickets: Lecture only - $40\n\nLecture and reception - $140\n\nUnderwriter - $280+\n\nhttps://www.memorialhallotr.com/cincinnati-shows/womans-city-club-\n\nhelen-thorpe/\n\n\n\nCosponsors to date:\n\nAIR\, Inc.\n\nCenter for Closing the Health Gap\n\nCincinnati Federation of Teachers\n\nCincinnati Interfaith Workers Center\n\nCincinnati NOW\n\nCincinnati Women's Political Caucus\n\nCincinnatus Association\n\nCincinnati/Hamilton County\n\nCommunity Action Agency\n\nCincinnati Museum Center and\n\nFreedom Center\n\nContact Center\n\nForeign Policy Leadership Council\n\nFriends of Harriet Beecher Stowe House\n\nFriends of Women's\, Gender and\n\nSexuality Studies at U.C.\n\nHispanic Chamber of Commerce\n\nLeague of Women Voters of Greater Cinti\n\nMission Council of St. John's UU Church\n\nNick Hausmann\, Financial Advisor\n\nPlanned Parenthood SW Ohio\n\nSBN Consulting\n\nSouthwestern Ohio Education Association\n\nZonta Club of Cincinnati
