Freedom Lecture: From Enslavement to Prosperity

WHAT: As Ohio celebrates International Underground Railroad Month this September, the Freedom Center is exploring the enduring legacy of Black resilience in the face of racism and violence. Their free lecture entitled From Enslavement to Prosperity explores how historic Black communities – like 19th century Little Africa on the banks of the Ohio River and 20th century Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma – have played an instrumental role in shaping America’s complete narrative. Many of these communities thrived despite the social realities of racism and violence and their accounts of perseverance continues to challenge and inspire us today.
 
For the lecture, the Freedom Center is welcoming the executive director of the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center and Ohio native Philip Armstrong who will provide unique perspective on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and the resurgence of the Greenwood community.
