We will have a panel to talk about the academic challenges and difficulties experienced by families during the pandemic as well as any plans moving forward to help those Latino students who have fallen behind academically. In addition, the panel would also discuss non-academic challenges, resources, finances, etc. that Latino families have experienced.
Our speakers will be:
Mireika “Marie” Kobayashi, M.Ed is currently a Department of Student Services Manager in Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) helping to oversee English for Speakers of Other Languages supports and services. During the past over 19 years, she has worked in consultation with administrators, teachers, families, and community leaders in order to ensure that supports are in place to enhance the acquisition of languages, particularly academic English, for diverse learners in the region. She has taught and developed courses at the college level in the area of cultural diversity and second language acquisition as well as served as a member of local community advocacy organizations, including the English Language Learning Foundation, LULAC, Cincinnati COMPASS, and Live-a-Language Foundation.
Mary Jo Montenegro-Miller has been working in Cincinnati Public Schools since 1990, as a school social worker in various schools. Before this, she worked in both educational and health care settings in Chicago and Cincinnati. Most recently, she has worked primarily with ELL students, families and staff. Her goals are to help with access so that our ELL students and families can take part and benefit from all CPS programs and services, best fit- help families find the most appropriate school and educational setting within CPS, given their cultural, linguistic and academic needs, Communication- strengthen and support home-school communication and collaboration across the district. She has her Masters in Social Service Administration and my LISW-S.
Kelli Perrin has been with Hamilton County ESC and an EL Consultant for the past 8 years most recently working in Princeton City Schools as the EL Coordinator. Her previous experience was in Cincinnati Public Schools where she spent 19 years working with students from diverse populations and backgrounds. She has contributed to Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement, presented at Ohio TESOL Convention, and serves as an Adjunct at the University of Cincinnati in the Early Childhood program.
