The FBI reported 8,263 hate crime incidents against 11,126 victims in 2020. Of that number, 5,227 were race-based – a 32% increase over the year before. Anti-Black hate crimes continue to be the largest category, with 2,871 incidents in 2020 – a 49% increase over 2019. There were also 279 anti-Asian incidents reported in 2020 – a staggering 77% increase over the previous year. Incidents against Hispanic and Latinx people are also significant, with 517 cases reported.
While hate crimes are often focused on ethnic groups due to our visual bias, incidents based on religion (683 anti-Jewish incidents, 110 anti-Muslim incidents, 15 anti-Buddhist incidents and 89 anti-Sikh incidents), disability (130 total incidents) and gender identity (up 9% based on gender and up 34% based on gender identity) are significant sources of fear and stress for groups in the United States.
