May 2    2024 Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit

2024 Theme: From Vision to Action

We find ourselves at a critical juncture for collective action as we work to address the global and local impacts of the climate crisis. We can and must bring the energy and spirit of collaboration to implement solutions that advance mitigation, adaptation, and climate justice.

Last year’s Summit theme focused on imagining visionary and inspiring possibilities that inform, empower, and motivate our actions to create a more vibrant, equitable, and thriving region. This year, building from a place of hope and renewed resilience, we will focus on aligning our collective efforts to move from vision to action.

The climate challenge and new opportunities invite us to chart the course for a great future together. With the right combination of planning, persistence, and partnerships, the future we envision is within our grasp. Climate action is occurring at all levels of government, business, academia, non-profits, advocacy groups, and within our neighborhoods. Across all systems and actions, there is a role for everyone to make an impact!

The Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit serves as a spark for connecting and learning together, deepening our resolve, and celebrating collaborative climate solutions as we each find our place in the movement to secure a resilient, equitable, and thriving future.

The clown Mauro envisions that his own burial will take place amid a carnival atmosphere and be attended by tender angels. The show contrasts the grand with the intimate, the silly with the tragic, and the beauty of perfection with the appeal of imperfection. It also emphasizes the strength and vulnerability of the clown as well as his knowledge and generosity to represent the aspect of humanity that exists in each of us. Corteo is guided through a timeless ceremony in which fantasy teases reality with music, which is both poetic and mischievous.

May 15    Music, Medicine, and Pieces In Between: Jazz and conversation with Dr. Alvin Crawford

Join Dr. Alvin Crawford as he sits down with medical student Abraham Araya for a chat about his life, career, obstacles and passion. Reception with CCM jazz quartet to follow.

The Bone Doctor's Concerto: Music, Surgery, and the Pieces in Between is the story of one of Cincinnati’s most influential leaders in medicine. Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1939, Dr. Alvin Crawford grew up and attended medical school in a segregated world. Beginning with his early life in Orange Mound—a self-contained community for freed slaves established in the 1890s—Crawford’s autobiography describes his flirtation with a music degree and time spent playing in jazz bands through the segregated South. In 1960, Crawford began his ground-breaking medical career with his entrance into the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, becoming the school’s first African American student. After completing his medical training and traveling the world as a surgeon for the Navy, Crawford found himself in Cincinnati, where he established the Comprehensive Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the first in the region.

Underlying this story are the systemic and very personal incidents of racism Crawford experienced throughout his career. His autobiography is a personal account of segregation, integration, ambition, hard work and taking risks.

Jun 19    Juneteenth Jubilee

Join us for a free daylong festival to celebrate true independence with live music, programming, community vendors and food trucks for a jubilant takeover of Freedom Way. Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Orlando Brown, Jr. will be the event’s featured guest, delivering a motivational speech followed by a photo and autograph session.

The inaugural Juneteenth Jubilee is reminiscent of the joy and community that were the hallmarks of the earliest Juneteenth celebrations, bringing people together around music, food and community. The event will feature a stage on the Freedom Center plaza, with live music and performances. Minority- and woman-owned food trucks will bookend Freedom Way, serving barbecue, Tex Mex, classic cookout favorites and more. And a Community Market featuring local small businesses will give guests an opportunity to shop and support local.

The Juneteenth Jubilee will culminate in a march down the banks to the Ohio River, the symbolic River Jordan over which thousands of enslaved people crossed into freedom on the Underground Railroad.

Programming and activities during the day will also focus on health equity, economic empowerment and voter education and engagement.
