Job Overview

An Assistant Professor Educator within CCPS has a primary responsibility for Teaching (80%). Additionally, Assistant Professor Educators are expected to contribute to Service activities (5-15%) and engage in Scholarly or Professional activities (5-15%).
 
Assistant Professor Educators hired into this role will have primary responsibility for teaching and advising Co-op students from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) in creative professional development and career readiness. While roles and responsibilities are subject to shift based on enrollment and programmatic needs, it is expected that faculty hired into this role will have primary teaching and advising responsibility for students in the Myron E. Ullman Jr. School of Design or the School of Art. This posting is intended to recruit three faculty members for the DAAP Co-op team. Faculty members would have primary responsibilities for one of the following programs: (1) Communication Design (formerly Graphic Design and Digital Design), (2) Fashion Design, (3) Industrial Design, or (4) Fine Arts.
 
Teaching within this faculty role is unique. Assistant Professor Educators on the DAAP Co-op team may engage in some classroom instruction, but the majority of instruction and assessment of learning is conducted through individual or small-group advising. The core responsibility of this position is fostering the professional development of students and preparing them for a post-grad life of personal and professional fulfillment. Primary responsibilities that support DAAP Co-op student success include teaching professional development courses for Design and/or Fine Arts majors, engaging in small group or individual instruction centered around reflective practice, advising on creative portfolio development, designing curricula in alignment with student needs and the goals of DAAP, organizing lessons and workshops that support learning outcomes, facilitating and providing mentorship through student position searches, utilizing Learning Management Systems and preparing materials that are universally accessible (ADA Compliant), cultivating a culture of belonging for students from diverse backgrounds, and working collaboratively with our Partnership Development team and industry partners to create employment opportunities for students.
 
Educator track faculty typically engage in Service to their division, university, and profession by serving on committees and task forces. Scholarly and Professional activities typically involve research that leads to presentation and/or publication, including but not limited to understanding the impact of their teaching methods. Scholarly and Professional activities may also include professional development, creative or industry contributions, and demonstrated application of skills or knowledge acquired.
 
This position is Educator track and candidates are not eligible for Tenure
 
Essential Functions

  • Teach and advise students primarily from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP).
  • Conduct and teach assigned undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses and seminars.
  • Facilitate small group or individual instructional meetings.
  • Provide instruction, feedback, and mentorship related to development of professional creative portfolios.
  • Attend meetings, participate in governance, prepare materials for teaching.
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum for department and/or college.
  • Serve as an experiential learning and career education advisor for students and evaluate student coursework.
  • Serve on college or university committees and participate in curriculum development activities. Serve on committees, independent study activities, and off-campus learning.
  • Engage in other activities ancillary to or in support of their responsibilities.
  • Render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty.
  • Review, and where necessary, respond in a timely manner to all University-related communications.

 Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree with a minimum of three years of relevant, professional work experience within design or creative industries. Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree may be considered with five years of relevant, professional work experience within design or creative industries.
  • Demonstrated organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Effectiveness in interpersonal relationships and the ability to work harmoniously with a variety of interest groups.
  • Experience (or transferrable skills) that prepare the candidate to carry out the primary responsibilities of this position. The credentials of candidates should illustrate successful instruction of professional development curricula for creative students and/or equivalent mentorship of emerging professionals in creative industry contexts, understanding of roles and opportunities within design or creative industries, experience in evaluation of professional creative portfolios, and potential for achievement within the areas of Teaching, Scholarly and Professional Activities, and Service.

 Appointment Information

Assistant Professor Educators hired through this posting will join the DAAP Co-op team. Assistant Professor Educators for DAAP Co-op are initially hired into a multi-year contract. The contract for each academic year is comprised of 2 primary semesters (Fall and Spring), as well as a secondary semester (Summer), during which faculty are contracted to work 34 days for compensation equal to 19% of the 2-semester base salary.
 
Promotion, Tenure (RPT): This initial multi-year appointment may be renewed under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Unit (CBA), provided one’s performance satisfies the criteria of the college’s guidelines for reappointment, program need, available budget, and upon approval by the Provost. The RPT process reviews work and contributions to teaching, scholarly/professional activities, and service as noted in the job description.
