Xavier is seeking an Athletic Academic Specialist. This position provides academic coordinating, advising, and mentoring to designated athletic teams. Additionally, it is responsible for overseeing all award nominations including NCAA, Big East, Xavier University, and any other relevant awards. This position will also manage the day to day study table program for student-athletes. This position reports directly to the Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services.       

This specialist will advise and coordinate student-athletes in areas of course selection, registration, graduation and NCAA eligibility requirements; serves as primary athletic academic specialist to a caseload of student athletes and meets regularly with student athletes and all first-year students to monitor academic performance; communicates with faculty members, coaches, and student-athletes regarding academic progress and NCAA rules and regulations; offers mentoring to student-athletes on a regular basis on issues related to transitioning into college, navigating personal and interpersonal issues, personal development, and career exploration; travels with the teams to provide academic assistance, as needed; meets with prospective student athletes and families during official recruiting visits; maintains regular contact and coordinates tutoring services for at-risk student-athletes on these teams; master a firm knowledge of campus support offices and refers student-athletes to appropriate campus resources, e.g. Bursar, Registrar, Career Development, Health and Wellness, Financial Aid, Disability Services, etc.

This specialist must understand curriculum, policies, procedures, campus and community resources, and accurately shares information with students as needed; understand and be able to implement retention/persistence strategies for the designated student-athlete caseload; serve as an advocate for student-athletes; motivate students to make informed decisions that positively influence academic, personal, and professional development around topics such as time management, organization, career planning, test taking, study strategies, motivation, procrastination, goal setting and more; be able to deliver responsibilities in one-on-one sessions and in groups; face-to-face and in various electronic forms (i.e. email and Zoom); encourage students to form a connection to the campus that is consistent with their interests, goals, and development. This position should be able to effectively use technology including Banner, Degree Works, Navigate (EAB), in every day work with student-athletes (training will be provided).

Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in relevant field preferred
