The Assistant Director is a member of the Center for Student Engagement, Activities, and Leadership team. The Center is a part of the Division of Student life and includes the Office of Student Activities; The Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service; and the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. The Assistant Director reports to an Associate Director of the Center and works with colleagues and stakeholders in the enhancement of community engagement, civic engagement, and leadership development at Miami University. The Assistant Director may supervise one Graduate Assistant and provides supplementary support to additional Graduate Student staff and Practicum students. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with students, campus partners, community leaders, and departments to provide students with the opportunity to engage with communities of interest and develop a sense of belonging. The Assistant Director works with the entire Center and other colleagues to develop and implement opportunities for students to understand their leadership skills and how they can use them to positively impact the community.
The Assistant Director represents the Center through multiple campus committees that support the leadership, service, and civic engagement mission of the Wilks Institute. The Assistant Director also fosters close working relationships with campus partners, community partners, and community-based organizations.
- Exercise collaborative leadership within the Center to facilitate the coordination of the Wilks Fellows program (peer leaders/facilitators) and other traditional service, leadership, and community engagement programs.
- Serve as a member of and assist the Multifaith Engagement for Transformative Action (META) Collective to encourage dialogue, collaboration, awareness, and relationships amongst communities of faith and secular organizations.
- Coordinate civic engagement initiatives within the Wilks Institute and the Center. This includes the Andrew Goodman Foundation grant and the Campus Votes Project.
- Teach EDL 290, Nature of Group Leadership (Course for Scholar Leader LLC) or similar course on a rotating basis (typically every other year).
- Advise RedHawks Count and Multifaith Engagement for Transformative Action (META) student organizations.
- Advise the Associated Student Government (ASG) Student Senate.
- Manage the ComMUnity Connect platform designed to connect students and student groups with community service and volunteer opportunities.
- Potentially supervise 1 Graduate Assistant, Graduate Practicum student and up to 10 undergraduate student employees (Wilks Fellows).
- Assist the Associate Director and other Center team members with the implementation of large-scale service initiatives/days of service and community engagement activities designed to facilitate positive relationships between the City of Oxford residents, Butler County community members and Miami University students.
- Deliver workshops and programs designed to increase student awareness of and participation in civic engagement, community engagement, and community service.
- Assist with Center wide and Institute Social Media and website initiatives and updates. Create and manage departmental marketing, including writing and managing regularly scheduled newsletters, digital marketing, print materials and website updates.
- Actively participate in Student Life and University Committees. Represent the Center on several campus committees that are aligned with the service and community engagement missions of the Wilks Institute.
- Manage event/program processes for large scale events and work collaboratively with campus partners and off-campus partners and vendors to ensure the success of events.
- Willingness to work some nights and weekends to facilitate programs and activities designed to engage and serve students.
- Bachelor’s degree
- One year of experience in higher education, student affairs, or a related field
- Master’s Degree in Leadership/Management, College Student Personnel, Social Work, Education or related field
- One or more years of professional experience in Student Affairs, Higher Education or related fields.
- Knowledge of or certifications in personal assessment instruments (Clifton Strengths, MBTI, Emotional Intelligence, International Coaching Federation, etc.).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge and effective application of service and community engagement theories.
- Proven ability to work with diverse populations.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
- Demonstrated experience in supervision of student staff members.
- Familiarity with assessment practices.
- Familiarity with social media accounts and website management.
