Job Summary:
Miami University invites applications and nominations for Associate Vice President for Student Life/ Dean of Students. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Life, the Associate Vice President/ Dean of Students leads the University’s planning and response efforts related to student crises and conduct, leading our care and crisis management teams; provides leadership to offices focused on care, support, and advocacy; and takes a leadership role in academic success and in building partnerships with faculty and Academic Affairs, serving on the Council of Academic Deans.

The Dean provides strategic leadership and visionary direction to the following offices and staff members: Residence Life, Community Standards, Office of the Dean of Students, Rinella Learning Center, and the Miller Center for Student Disability Services.

An essential part of the Dean’s role is to work proactively to build relationships with students, with the campus, and with off-campus partners to create a healthy and safe community where all students feel a sense of belonging and can thrive. The Dean needs to be a visible presence on campus, supporting both individual students as well as programs and services to meet students’ needs. They will help envision and shape the overall experience of students, and carry out other duties vital to achieving the Student Life mission, as led by the Vice President for Student Life.

Duties/Physical Demands:

  • Serve as a member of the leadership team for the Division of Student Life, and represent the Division in the absence of the Vice President.
  • In partnership with the VPSL and AVPs, participate in strategic planning, goal setting, implementation, and review of the initiatives and efforts within the division’s six focus areas: community and belonging; diversity and inclusion; student transitions; academic support; health and wellness; and engagement and leadership.
  • Play a leading role in planning and executing strategic initiatives related to student crises and conduct, student well-being, academic support and student success.
  • Participate in the crafting, updating, and oversight of Student Life policies.
  • Provide oversight and strategic leadership to the following departments within the Division of Student Life: Residence Life, Rinella Learning Center, Miller Center for Student Disability Services, Community Standards, and the Office of the Dean of Students (including the Assistant Dean/Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students). Oversight includes guiding decision-making, priority setting, strategic planning, budget oversight, and overall support.
  • Directly supervise an Associate Dean of Students, four directors, and an administrative assistant, and provide indirect supervision to more than 60 full-time staff members.
  • Serve as the primary on-call administrator for the University for serious student crises, and provide on-going team training and development to sustain a broader on-call rotation for lower level emergencies and issues.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the Miami University Police Department (MUPD), the Oxford Police Department (OPD), and other partners in the City of Oxford to promote the safety of our students and effectively respond to crises.
  • In coordination with Student Disability Services and the Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity, serve as the appellate officer for ADA accommodation related grievances.
  • Maintain high visibility within the campus community, particularly with students.
  • Continually measure and assess progress toward well-conceived and regularly updated strategic goals.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships within Student Life as well as with senior officers of the university, deans, faculty, other university departments (especially Enrollment Management and Student Success, Academic Affairs, MUPD, and University Communications and Marketing), and a range of associated stakeholders.
  • Provide support to student life leadership at the Miami Regionals campuses.
  • Represent units under supervision to internal and external constituencies; build relationships in the community, contributing to the positive image of the university and creating connections to local resources and partnerships.
  • Create reports and presentations, and complete other projects and duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree and eight years of experience working in higher education with progressive administrative and supervisory roles


  • MBA, Juris Doctor, or other terminal degree WITH 10 years of experience working in higher education with progressive administrative and supervisory roles
  • Significant experience in responding to and managing student crises.
  • Experience with behavioral intervention/ care teams.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field.
  • At least three years experience at the director level or higher in a student affairs department.
  • Experience in multiple student affairs functional areas.
  • Experience with Title IX and Clery compliance requirements.
  • Experience working with university conduct systems.
  • Demonstrated track record of collaboration with faculty and Academic Affairs and working on retention and persistence efforts.

  • Excellent communication, strategic planning, assessment, and budgeting skills.
  • Strong strategic and problem solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to collaboration with a variety of partners on and off campus.
  • Knowledge of current issues, trends, and best practices related to higher education, and familiarity with legal and compliance issues in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience in higher education and student affairs/student life.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects and issues.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability and willingness to serve in a 24/7 on-call capacity related to student emergency response, as required.
  • A demonstrated passion for students focusing on their well-being, development, success, and learning, and a personal track record of continuous learning to stay current on new ideas and technologies relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrated understanding of diverse student populations and best practices to support and serve the breadth of students at Miami University.
  • A desire to work in a complex environment that values both data-informed decision making and innovation.
