The Director, Research and Development- BioScience is responsible for proactively leading a team to identify and drive product and process improvements, explore and develop new and innovative pharmaceutical products, and establish process and procedure for best-in-class efficiencies through commercialization. The candidate for this position is highly self-motivated, with excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Core Responsibilities

Provides strategic direction and leadership, leverages resources, develops both internal and external relationships and provides coordination for projects and technologies.

  • Responsible for developing and executing strategies that incorporate business and commercial objectives across pharmaceutical, medical device, and regenerative medicine priorities
  • Advances technical expertise and knowledge within the Research and Development Department to support new product development, identify and create new platforms that are commercially viable, and meets current trends and future needs to create differentiation in the market.
  • Utilizes both company's and third party technologies to deliver key projects.
  • Provides technical advice to Senior Management on advances and developments within the scientific community that may be of benefit to the company.
  • Ensures new product development fits in with existing manufacturing capabilities and works with Operations to develop new processes where required to ensure successful scale up and production of products at manufacturing sites.
  • Approves and submits proposals considered feasible to Management for consideration and allocation of funds or allocates funds from department budget.
  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects, such as preparation of records of expenditures and research findings, progress reports, and staff meetings, in order to inform management of current status of each project.
  • Responsible for actively participating in the project management aspects of each product, aligning research and development with commercial and operational strategic objectives.
  • Develops relationships with key customers and improves collaboration with these stakeholders.
  • Networks with outside resources - universities, etc. - to keep up to date with ongoing research.
  • Recruits, hires, and trains department staff, evaluates staff performance, and develops goals and objectives for staff.
  • Leading diverse teams with varying scope

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Ph.D. training in the field of Biology/Chemistry/Biochemical Engineering, with experience in the manufacturing process of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), medical device, and/or regenerative medicine and 10+ years relevant professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience, required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years' experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.
  • Previous experience in pharmaceutical industry including a network with research institutions and industry highly desired.
  • Organizational, time management, multi-tasking, financial modeling, and project management skills are essential.
  • The ability to work through innovative, complex, unstructured problems
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Highly analytical
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and guidance to the R&D team.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
