Reports To: Director of Applied Sports Science

Location: Goodyear, AZ with up to 50% travel nationally and internationally 

Job Purpose: 
The Applied Sports Science Coordinator is to work as a part of the Cincinnati Reds Health and Performance department with the primary objective of applying practical, technical, and tactical health, performance, and human movement skill enhancement protocols across the Reds organization, with special focus on Minor League player development, that revolve around baseball’s key performance indicators. Sports Science, as applied in this instance, is the scientific study of physiology and biomechanics in relation to the ability of the human body to adapt to motion, movement and physical activity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Implement and manage athlete monitoring program throughout Minor League system to deliver actionable insights to multiple stakeholders across baseball operations
  • Collaborate with H&P and PD staff to identify and track measurable objectives as part of holistic player development plans
  • Management oversight responsibilities with sports science staff in the Dominican Republic and H&P specialists at minor league affiliate staffs 
  • Work closely with Director of Applied Sports Science, ML Applied Sports Scientist, Applied Biomechanist, Analyst and PD staff to identify performance demands of baseball
  • Conduct and ensure proper administration of tests to evaluate physical and physiological responses to training and competition; assist Applied Sport Biomechanist with setup and data collection during biomechanical assessments as needed
  • Work within our integrated Health and Performance staff: Sports Science, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Mental Skills, Wellness, Nutrition, and Strength and Conditioning on items such as: 
    • Athlete centered holistic short and long term player development plans via creation of daily, weekly, monthly, and season long actionable reports and visualizations delivered to players and staff from the Reds Athlete Management System (AMS) 
    • Pursuing and onboarding innovative technologies. 
    • Nutrition initiatives for performance fueling considerations as they pertain to the physiological adaptations/demands from training and the highest level of athletic competition 
    • Enhancing and assisting in the evaluation of rehab return to play protocols through the use of objective assessments and actionable reports provided to our Rehab staff 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant scientific literature, internal R&D and analytics, and athlete testing and monitoring data to inform applied sport science tactics that players, field staff, or health and performance staff to easily integrate into their daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal programs
  • Utilization, including beta testing and evaluation of the value and accuracy of the most current and reliable scientific equipment available in sport to optimize players in game performance or health outcomes. 
  • Critical decision-making ability, pay close attention to detail, have strong presentation skills, and outstanding interpersonal skills. 
  • Assist in the formation of guidelines for player workload subscription in micro and macro phases of the changing seasons throughout the calendar year
  • Contribute to continued education opportunities, including presenting at, for both inter and intradepartmental summits
  • Effectively work with our field staff on movement mechanics as it pertains to baseball skill acquisition i.e. the correlation between assessing and teaching human body movement for hitting and pitching mechanics
  • Integrate applied sports science protocols into all Reds off-season performance development camps 
  • Be prepared to assist the scouting department in performance assessments and injury risk profiles of amateur players.
  • Support research projects and other Applied Sports Science initiatives as needed
Experience, Education and Licensure: 
  • Graduate degree in an exercise science related field (PhD preferred); CSCS a plus
  • v3+ years managing sport science/athlete monitoring program in collegiate, Olympic, or professional sport

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Independent judgment and ability to multitask is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to work long, flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Experience using sport technology (e.g., force plates, timing gates, accelerometer/IMU/LTP, etc.) to inform the training process
  • Must be trustworthy and comfortable with managing large quantities of money and sensitive information.
  • High level of interpersonal skills and be able to effectively communicate with wide range of departments, seniority levels and personalities.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint); proficiency in R/Python a plus
  • Adhere to Cincinnati Reds Organization Policies and Procedures. 
  • Act as a role model within and outside the Cincinnati Reds Organization.
  • Performs duties as workload necessitates.
  • Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Meet Department productivity standards.
