Job Title: Minor League Mental Skills Coach
Reports To: Mental Skills Coordinator

Job Purpose: To oversee and deliver the RedsWay of mental skills training that encompasses and solidifies how Cincinnati Reds baseball is played. To teach and develop both players and staff members the pre-game, in-game, and off-field fundamentals of winning baseball by cultivating trust and providing cutting-edge mental training. To ensure consistent instruction and philosophies to maximize ability and availability of mental skills throughout the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support a winning style of play commensurate with the storied history of the Cincinnati Reds Organization.
  • Ensure consistency of instruction from the Rookie level through the Major Leagues.
  • Provide impactful services during Spring Training, during travel to affiliate teams throughout the season, provide training and support during Fall Instructional League, and participate in off-season camps.
  • Maintain consistent collaboration and communication with other mental skills staff.
  • Provide direction for all staff concerning the mental approach to competing.
  • Individualize plans for Minor League players and staff to seek opportunities for growth and manage adversity.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary staff (e.g., player development, front office, H&P, scouting, and analytics).
  • Conduct group and individual training for resilience building for rehabilitation players.
  • Communicate with all pertinent staff prior to visiting any Minor League team, to ensure teaching or intervention(s) provided to players is consistent with player plans.
  • Be available by phone for players and staff seeking mental skill support and growth.
  • Assist in research and development within the field of sport and performance psychology, continually progressing the mental skills program, the H&P Department, and the Reds Organization.
  • Collect data and create viable measures to quantify the impact of our mental skills program.
  • Document service provided to groups and individuals.
  • Support early identification of potential mental health issues and refer to our wellness coordinator.
  • Model the behaviors of humility, trust, leadership, empathy, and respect.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
  • Experience in professional baseball preferred.
  • Previous experience working in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Completion of a graduate degree in the field of sport and/or performance psychology.
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) via the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) preferred.
  • 2+ years working on mental performance strategies with military, collegiate, Olympic, or professional athletes.
  • Excellent written, communication, behavior change, and problem-solving skills.
  • Independent judgment and ability to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload.
  • High level of interpersonal skills and ability to effectively embed and communicate with wide range of departments, seniority levels and personalities.
  • Interest and/or understanding of player development and baseball analytics.
  • Ability to understand and advocate for changes due to new information and/or tools in baseball.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (e.g., Microsoft Suite).

  • Adhere to the American Psychological Association (APA) and AASP code of ethics.
  • Adhere to Cincinnati Reds Organization Policies and Procedures.
  • Strong purpose, motivation, and work ethic to work long, flexible hours including weekend and holidays.
  • Be available for remote support for affiliate staffs and players.
  • Act as a role model within and outside the Cincinnati Reds Organization.
  • Performs duties as workload necessitates.
  • Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Meet Department productivity standards.
