It’s a meaningful week downtown as organizations across The Queen City celebrate and honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of equality and justice. On Monday, join the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for the 20th annual King Legacy Celebration. The ticketed event represents the Freedom Center’s commitment to community unity and is an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s enduring message that freedom is a universal and fundamental human right. The King Legacy Celebration offers a morning of reflection and call to action as well as a continental breakfast, an opportunity for fellowship, and a rousing program that will feature live music performances and a keynote presentation from equity innovator, researcher, and documentarian Dr. Wendy Ellis. Following Dr. Ellis’s keynote, the Freedom Center will host a day of free admission and an afternoon program with Dr. Ellis, as well as engagement opportunities for individuals to walk away with actionable ways to address inequities in their communities. The doors open at 8AM and the program starts at 8:30AM. Tickets are available for purchase online!

For the 50th year, the Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition of Cincinnati is proudly hosting its free program and march on Monday with the theme, “Jubilee for MLK’s Beloved Community,” honoring Dr. King’s vision of unity and peace from his 1960 Freedom Jubilee speech in Pittsburgh. The Commemorative March will begin Monday at 10:30AM at The Freedom Center and follow a path to Washington Park. For those unable to march, a complimentary “Rosa Parks Bus” from Metro will provide transportation. The march will be followed by a celebratory Annual Program at Music Hall at 12PM featuring musical performances, presentations, and an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Professor of History at Ohio State University. The day’s events are free and open to community members of all ages!

Jazz at the Memo warms wintery Monday nights at historic Memorial Hall in the heart of Over-the-Rhine, featuring the finest of Cincinnati’s thriving jazz scene and some of the region’s premier women and BIPOC artists. This week, in honor of Dr. King, celebrated trombonist Marc Fields will lead a sterling quartet in an exploration of the music of Black composers. Set in the beautiful and acoustically superb Anderson Theater, this is certain to be a memorable end to MLK Day. Tickets are going fast! Reserve your seat today.

Held annually on the Tuesday following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Cincinnati’s National Day of Racial Healing brings together leaders from diverse backgrounds and identities from communities across the Greater Cincinnati Area to build relationships and work toward transformation. This year, the event will celebrate its fifth anniversary at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation from 5 to 8PM. The one-day event is an opportunity to unite all people in their common humanity and inspire collective action to create a more just and equitable city. The sessions offer spaces to acknowledge truths and collaborate to create meaningful change. Registration is open now!
