BOYCHOIR FESTIVAL CHOIR: INTERLOCKING RHYTHMS

CINCINNATI, OH: December 14, 2021 Cincinnati Boychoir welcomes educator, composer and conductor Sherry Blevins to Cincinnati to guide boys through a song composition workshop as part of the Boychoir Festival Choir on February 26th at Memorial Hall. The day’s events will also include bucket drumming with Cincinnati’s own Nick Rose-Stamey of Band in a Bus, as well as choral rehearsals and a public performance featuring boys from throughout the Greater Cincinnati region.

Festival choir offers a chance for young singers to enhance their musicality and make music with boys from all over the community, including current members from the Cincinnati Boychoir. Registration for Festival Choir is open to all boys in grades 3-6.

From artistic director Jason Alexander Holmes: “There are so many reasons to be excited about the new life we’re breathing into the Boychoir Festival this season. Equity and access are two of our guiding lights in programming at the Boychoir. By bringing the program to community centers and schools, we are erasing barriers to entry. At the same time, we’re so pleased to be able to bring boys from all over the area to perform in Memorial Hall, a treasured performance venue. And I haven’t even mentioned choral artistry yet! The program the boys will sing explores the idea of Interlocking Rhythms through diverse musical styles, informed by diverse cultural experiences. Additionally, the boys will quite literally perform interlocking rhythms in the form of bucket drumming with the wonderful Nick Rose-Stamey. They will see how their ideas for text and music can come together in an original composition with composer and educator Sherry Blevins. So, as you can see, from the design of the program to the opportunities for singing, playing, and creating, the Festival Choir will be a jam packed festival of boys’ voices. How can you be anything but excited and inspired by that?!”

Each boy will participate in two rehearsals at one of four community locations and then come together for a day of music-making at the Boychoir Festival on February 26th. This concert will include repertoire from a variety of composers, including Sherry Blevins and Curtis Mayfield.

Festival Day will feature musical workshops led by guest clinicians, team-building activities, rehearsals and a performance. Each boy will receive a free t-shirt. Registration fee is $25. All boys in grades 3-6 are welcome to register using the following link: https://cincinnatiboychoir.org/festival-choir

The community rehearsals will take place on two Saturdays between January 15 and February 19 at four locations: the Fitton Center for the Arts in Hamilton, The Barn in Mariemont, NKU School of the Arts in Highland Heights, KY, and St. Catharine of Siena in Westwood. Festival Day will take place at Memorial Hall, on February 26, 2022. For more information about dates, times and locations, visit https://cincinnatiboychoir.org/festival-choir.
