Help Prevention Prescription Drug Abuse/Misuse (April 27, 2021 - Cincinnati, OH)- Safely disposing of unwanted or expired medications is a way to help prevent prescription drug abuse. Often people do not know what to do with medications they no longer need or want. These medicines remain in the home and create a risk for misuse, abuse, and potential poisoning.

There are several responsible ways to discard medications you no longer need. Many communities have permanent prescription drug disposal locations. These locations are found in police departments, pharmacies, and hospitals. Using a prescription drug disposal bag is another safe disposal option. These bags are often available upon request at pharmacies.

Prescription disposal bags are convenient and easy to use. “In three simple steps, unwanted or expired medications are safely and permanently destroyed — making them unavailable for misuse, abuse, or accidental ingestion,” explains Nicole Schiesler, President & CEO of PreventionFIRST!

Once the medication has been deactivated, the sealed bag can be added to your home trash and safely disposed of at a landfill. These disposal bags can be used for pills, patches, liquids, creams, and films.

Ohio residents can request a prescription drug disposal bag at ohiorxdisposal.com. Complete the form and a Deterra® prescription disposal bag will be mailed to you at no cost.

“The Ohio Rx Disposal website is great resource for Ohio residents. By safely disposing of unneeded prescribed and over-the-counter medications, we can make our home safe and reduce the risk of substance use and misuse disorders,” encourages Schiesler.

PreventionFIRST! in partnership with Ohio Rx Disposal and Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is currently distributing Deterra® prescription disposal bag to any Ohio resident submitting a request.
