CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Health Department announced the new School-Based Health Center Summer Services Hours today. That means that the start of summer doesn’t mean the end of a variety of health care services you and your family need to stay healthy. Students and parents alike can still get quality health care like complete dental care, vision exams and glasses, sports physicals, annual well visits, immunizations, and sick visits all summer long.
“We understand that students and their families rely on school-based health centers to meet their needs for a full range of age-appropriate health care services,” stated Grant Mussman, MD, Medical Director, Cincinnati Health Department. “At our School-Based Health Centers, no one is denied medical services because of an inability to pay the bill. A patient’s insurance is billed where possible — primarily versions of Medicaid or private insurance — but ability to pay will not be a barrier to care so that we can guarantee that more children are receiving care."

With an emphasis on prevention, early intervention and risk reduction, school-based health centers counsel students on healthy habits and how to prevent injury, violence and other threats. School-based health centers often are operated as a partnership between the school and a community health organization, such as a community health center, hospital, or local health department. The specific services provided by school-based health centers vary based on community needs and resources as determined through collaborations between the community, the school district and the health care providers.
Nearly 2,000 school-based health centers operate nationwide, according to the most recent National Assembly on School-Based Health Care census. Most are open every day school is in session.
About 20 percent receive funding through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Health Center Program.
