Position Overview
Mount St. Joseph University invites applications for the position of Dean of the newly created School of Business and Communication. This new school represents a strategic initiative to combine business and communication disciplines, offering students a unique and integrated educational experience. The Dean will provide visionary leadership, strategic direction, and administrative oversight, establishing the school’s identity, mission, and goals.
In a competitive environment with many prestigious institutions, the next Dean will play a pivotal role in identifying and cultivating a distinctive niche for the School of Business and Communication. This will involve leveraging our unique strengths, developing innovative programs, and forming strategic partnerships that enhance the school’s reputation and impact.
Additionally, the Dean will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the school’s ACBSP accreditation, ensuring that academic standards are met and exceeded. With a significant number of student-athletes, the Dean will also focus on creating an environment that supports their academic success and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Vision and Leadership: Develop and implement a strategic vision that establishes the School of Business and Communication as a leader in its field. Identify unique opportunities and niches to differentiate the school from competitors. Align school goals with the university’s strategic plan.
- Building the School’s Identity: As the leader of a newly created school, the Dean will be instrumental in shaping its identity, mission, and values. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and university leadership to develop a cohesive and forward-thinking academic and operational strategy.
- Accreditation and Quality Assurance: Lead efforts to maintain and enhance the school’s ACBSP accreditation. Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and engage in continuous improvement processes that enhance the quality and reputation of the school’s academic programs.
- Academic Excellence: Oversee the quality and integrity of academic programs, ensuring they meet the highest standards. Lead efforts in curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation. Promote innovative teaching and learning practices that enhance student outcomes.
- Faculty and Staff Development: Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse and talented faculty and staff. Foster a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages scholarly activity, professional growth, and service.
- Student Success and Support: Champion initiatives to enhance student recruitment, retention, and success. Focus on the unique needs of student-athletes, ensuring they receive the support needed to balance their academic and athletic commitments. Foster an inclusive and engaging environment that supports student development and achievement.
- Resource Management and Development: Manage the school’s budget and resources effectively. Identify and pursue external funding opportunities, including grants, partnerships, and philanthropic support. Build and maintain relationships with alumni, industry partners, and community organizations.
- Outreach and Partnerships: Serve as the primary advocate and spokesperson for the School of Business and Communication. Engage in outreach to build partnerships and collaborations that enhance the school’s visibility and impact. Develop and foster relationships with organizations in the Cincinnati area and the broader tri-state region. Work to elevate the school’s profile within the community and the broader academic and business landscapes.
Qualifications
- A terminal degree in a related field (e.g., Accounting, Communication Studies, Media Studies, Strategic Communication, Financial Economics, Management & Leadership, Marketing, Sport Management, or a closely related discipline) from an accredited institution. While a terminal degree is preferred, candidates with extensive, relevant professional experience and a proven ability to lead and innovate will be considered
- A distinguished record of academic achievement, teaching, and scholarship that meets the Mount’s requirements for tenure and promotion to the Associate Professor level.
- A minimum of five years of administrative experience in higher education, demonstrating effective leadership and strategic thinking.
- Proven ability to establish and develop a new academic unit or program.
- Experience with ACBSP or a related accreditation process and a commitment to maintaining high academic standards.
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Experience working with student-athletes and understanding their unique academic and support needs.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, alumni, industry partners, and community members.
