Nursing Faculty/Skills Lab Coordinator

THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING FOUNDATIONAL FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports the Mission of the University and the Mission, Philosophy, and Strategic Plan of the Department of Nursing;
  • Participates in regular, special, and standing committees and other activities of the Department of Nursing and School of Health Sciences;
  • Contributes to the development, evaluation, and revision of the nursing curricula utilizing the Organizing Framework for Effective Learning, the Overall and Specific Program Outcomes, the curriculum plan, and each faculty member's experience and specialization in nursing;
  • Participates in identifying and ordering appropriate library and other media materials pertinent to the curriculum;
  • Contributes to the development and revision of departmental and student policies in relation to administration, admission, retention, evaluation, progression, and graduation.
  • Assists in the development and evaluation of the Department's Strategic Plan, including budget planning and quality improvement initiatives;
  • Acts in accord with the Department's professional and ethical standards as developed and enunciated by the Faculty body;
  • Accepts leadership responsibilities within the Department;
  • Represents the Department of Nursing at the Department, University, and external community levels;
  • Participates in the recruitment of qualified faculty and students;
  • Supervises the activities of teaching assistants, as appropriate.


THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING FACULTY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Within the classroom setting:
    • Selects, plans, organizes, and implements learning experiences in assigned courses, which assist students to meet course and program outcomes;
    • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the subject matter;
    • Demonstrates an ability to integrate related content areas;
    • Uses creativity in developing an interactive learning environment;
    • Evaluates students based on course outcomes, identifies strengths and areas needing improvement, and facilitates developing strategies for improving and mastering the subject area.
  • Within the clinical setting
    • Facilitates integration of theory and evidence-based practice;
    • Makes assignments relevant to course outcomes and student's learning needs;
    • Identifies and evaluates agencies used for clinical laboratory experiences;
    • Establishes and maintains a cooperative working relationship with consumers, clinical agencies, and personnel;
    • Communicates goals for students' clinical practice according to specified criteria;
    • Evaluates students based on course outcomes, identifies strengths and areas needing improvement, and facilitates the development of strategies for improvement and mastery of clinical skills.

THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING FACULTY ACADEMIC ADVISING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interprets University, School, Department and Program policies for students;
  • Facilitates clarification and/or validation of course requirements, Program, School, University, and agency policies when communicating with students;
  • Posts regularly scheduled times for student conferences and advising sessions;
  • Maintains professional boundaries and sets limits with students;
  • Makes appropriate referrals and assists students to seek professional counseling and remedial opportunities when necessary.



SKILLS LAB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitates the effective and efficient operation of the Nursing Skills Labs, working collaboratively with faculty to assess and meet the 'program's curricular objectives. This individual will oversee the physical space, inventory, operation, and maintenance of the skills lab equipment to ensure safe and effective use of lab instruction within the Nursing Program.

  • The specific responsibilities of the Skills Lab Coordinator in the Department of Nursing include the following:
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and provide skills lab experiences to the Department of Nursing students, including, but not limited to, setting up and tearing down the supplies and equipment needed for skills lab class meetings and procuring student lab supply packs.
  • Develop and implement schedules for the efficient operation of the skills labs.
  • Adapt willingly and quickly to changing priorities, responsibilities, and student/faculty needs and expectations for skills labs anticipates and identifies student/faculty needs.
  • Inventory, budget, order, evaluate, and maintain the supplies and equipment in the skills labs. Maintain the organization of the skills labs and storage areas. Oversee the cleanliness of reusable skills lab supplies and equipment. Maintain the records of these responsibilities.
  • Plan for the future needs of the skills labs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the program's skills lab supply and equipment vendors and mechanics.
  • Exhibit a mentoring demeanor while holding students accountable for performance during skills lab activities. Possess an ability to be candid and enthusiastic during skills lab activities.
  • Evaluate the performance of student lab assistants/student workers.
  • Arrange for laundering linens, folding linens, and restocking shelves.
  • Update keypad codes in the School of Health Sciences and alert appropriate faculty and staff.
  • Review and recommend policies and procedures for efficiently using the skills labs.
  • Network with other Ohio Nursing Skills Lab Consortium members to share resources, information, and ideas.
  • Collaborate with departments outside of Nursing regarding the temporary use of skills lab supplies or equipment.


Qualifications

A. Educational

  1. BSN required (MSN or higher preferred).
  2. A minimum of two years of clinical experience (required)

B. Professional

  1. Maintains current license to practice in Ohio as a registered nurse (required);
  2. Previous college/university teaching experience at the undergraduate/graduate level (preferred).
  3. Experience with online/face-to-face/hybrid/blended learning (preferred).
  4. Membership in professional organizations (preferred);

 

C. Personal

  1. Possesses a philosophy and value system consistent with that of the University and School of Health Sciences.
  2. Thinks creatively and critically;
  3. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing;
  4. Accepts responsibility for his/her own actions and assigned responsibilities;
  5. Completes assigned tasks in a thorough and timely manner;
  6. Works effectively as a member of a team.
