Fire Recruit / Firefighter

Each Fire Recruit is assigned to the Cincinnati Fire Training and Personnel Bureau for training as a Firefighter which will include Firefighter I & II, Fire Safety Inspector and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification training.  Each recruit must successfully complete all phases of the training necessary to qualify as a Firefighter. Once qualified and classified to the position of Firefighter, he/she is assigned to a fire company and will respond to all emergency calls, assist in the saving of lives and property and in the extinguishment of fires.

After training and upon successful completion of all required certifications, Fire Recruits promote to the position of Firefighter.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

TO QUALIFY AS A RECRUIT:
Knowledge of:

  • Basic mathematics.
  • Basic mechanics including hand tools, motors, pumps, pulleys and related devices.

Skill and Ability to:
  • Read and spell at 12th grade level.
  • Evaluate emergency situations.
  • Deal effectively with people.
  • Following orders and directives.
  • Handle power and manual tools.
  • Uphold a positive image in a public setting.

Examples of Work Performed:

After successful completion of Fire recruit training, is assigned to a company in which he/she performs the following tasks:
  • Connects, deploy and maneuver hose lines.
  • Operates and directs nozzles.
  • Raises, climbs and works from ladders and elevated positions
  • Overhauls structures using axes, pry bars, etc., to extinguish fires.
  • Operates various types of ladders, portable generators, exhaust fans, self-contained masks and, other specialized equipment in emergency situations and during training. Performs salvage operations before, during and after firefighting situations using protective tarps, squeegees, etc., to preserve, clean and protect belongings and property. Learns and applies knowledge of extinguishing agents and of liquids, solids, and gasses in relation to their being flammable, explosive, toxic, soluble or radioactive.
  • Inspects residential, commercial, industrial, and public facilities for fire safety, prevention pre-incident planning and familiarization purposes.
  • Uses ladders, ropes, and various equipment for rescuing people from fires, traffic accidents, drowning, electrical accidents and other emergency situations.
  • Assess, triage and treat patients by applying first aid as needed.
  • Responds to citizen requests, complaints, and questions, by providing information and assistance.
  • Performs cleaning and general maintenance chores on personal firefighting gear, fire station dorm, kitchen, apparatus, work room facilities, fire fighting vehicles, tools, and special equipment

Required Education and Experience
  • Applicants must possess High School Diploma or GED by time of appointment. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license in the state they reside by time of appointment.
  • Applicants must be 17 years of age at time of application and 18 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Applicants may not have reached their 41st birthday by date of appointment.
