The Registered Nurse (RN) for substance use disorder and Medication-Assisted Treatment plays a vital role in providing clinical care, education, and support for individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders. This position includes administering medication-assisted treatments (MAT), supporting harm reduction initiatives, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care. The RN ensures that patients receive compassionate, trauma-informed care that promotes recovery, improves health outcomes, and addresses complex health needs related to substance use.
Essential Functions:
Clinical Care and MAT Services:
- Administer MAT medications, including buprenorphine and naltrexone, under the direction of licensed providers and following clinical protocols.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and withdrawal symptoms and provide appropriate interventions.
- Conduct nursing assessments, including health histories, vital signs, and evaluation of substance use disorders.
- Educate patients on their treatment plans, medications, side effects, and the importance of adhering to MAT regimens.
- Ensure proper documentation of care in electronic health records (EHR), maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
Patient Education and Support:
- Provide education on harm reduction strategies, including overdose prevention, safe injection practices, and the use of naloxone
- Empower patients with the knowledge and tools to manage their recovery and make informed decisions about their health.
- Offer ongoing support for patients experiencing cravings or challenges in maintaining sobriety, encouraging them to stay engaged in care.
- Assist patients in understanding the importance of co-occurring treatment for behavioral health conditions, such as anxiety or depression, and provide referrals as necessary.
Care Coordination:
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team, including addiction counselors, social workers, and primary care providers, to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Coordinate with case managers to address social determinants of health, such as housing, transportation, and access to supportive services, that may impact a patient’s ability to adhere to their treatment.
- Facilitate referrals to appropriate levels of care (e.g., detoxification, inpatient, outpatient) based on clinical assessments and patient needs.
- Ensure that patients are connected to recovery support services, including peer support, behavioral health counseling, and community resources.
Population Health and Outreach:
- Assist in outreach efforts aimed at engaging high-risk populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, justice involvement, or co-occurring HIV and substance use.
- Partner with community organizations to provide education on SUD and MAT services and reduce stigma around addiction and treatment.
- Support initiatives to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations, including those served by refugee health programs or the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.
Program Development and Quality Improvement:
- Participate in quality improvement efforts to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes for MAT and SUD services.
- Assist in the development of policies and procedures that ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
- Provide input on training materials and resources for staff on substance use disorders, MAT, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current RN licensure in OHIO required. (COPY OF LICENSE MUST BE ATTACHED WITH APPLICATION)
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred. (COPY OF DEGREE MUST BE ATTACHED WITH APPLICATION)
- At least 2 years of experience in behavioral health, addiction services, or a related clinical setting.
- Familiarity with MAT protocols, harm reduction strategies, and SUD treatment models.
- Knowledge of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and HIV prevention preferred.
- Certification in addictions nursing (CARN) or willingness to obtain.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in trauma-informed care and motivational interviewing.
- Familiarity with EHR systems and regulatory requirements for MAT programs.
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required.
