Associate Director, Career and Experiential Education

Purpose:  Facilitate individual career coaching, co-op/internship process, and job search assistance with students.  Caseload primarily includes graduate students (at master’s and doctoral degree levels).  Provide alumni with career and professional development assistance, as needed. Develop and present workshops, career programs, and classroom presentations. Recruit, develop, and maintain an employer base to support the student career aspirations through post-graduation job search. Collaborate with the staff and Director for planning, problem-solving, and programming. Guide students to opportunities that build skills to make them ideal candidates for career-related employment or continued education.  Lead aspects of the First Destination Survey including outreach to students/alumni and developing partnerships with faculty.  The Associate Director provides leadership and assistance in career-related best practices, career assessment administration and interpretation, employer and student marketing materials, and electronic and print resources. May instruct professional development courses, as needed.

Detailed Explanation: 

Career Services / Career Advising Caseload:

  • Facilitate career coaching, advising, and professional development activities with stakeholders in assigned disciplines.  Offer general support for all disciplines offered at the University, as needed.
  • Develop familiarity with career inventories to recommend appropriate options for students (e.g. SII, MBTI, and Clifton Strengths).
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends related to education, employment, industry, and training; implement changes/enhancements as appropriate.
  • Participate in and support the students’ career development through other departmental activities.  Serve as point of contact/liaison for assigned schools, majors, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and facilitate educational workshops, events, programs and materials to meet educational outcomes and career-related needs of students and constituents.
  • Build relationships with and provide training for faculty; collaborate for assessment purposes every semester.
  • Teach and develop Career and Experiential Education courses as necessary.

Employer Relations:

  • Evaluate individual students’ skills and career goals to make appropriate recommendations related to the career path and continued education; prepare applicants from the assigned academic departments for post-graduation roles.
  • Develop and maintain employer relationships to support career development needs of the assigned majors/programs.
  • Participate in the Employer Advisory Board.

First Destination Survey:

  • Lead aspects of the First Destination Survey including outreach to students/alumni through flyers/social media, events, email communications, presentations, and more.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in post-graduation outcomes data collection; maintain expertise on NACE Standards & Protocols and Best Practices; educate CEEC team on data collection methods.
  • Develop systems to collect career outcomes data from employers and faculty.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support First Destination Survey data collection and sharing of reports.
  • Attend and host events to promote alumni data collection, such as Grad Finale, alumni networking events, etc.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Research, Office of the Registrar, Student Affairs, Alumni Programs, Institutional Advancement, and other MSJ departments to gather information on graduating students and alumni.

Data Tracking:

  • Manage data entry for appointments, First-Destination Survey data, etc. in University and career management systems.
  • Generate reports each semester detailing employment details and salary information, in response to requests from campus partners.
  • Provide instruction/assistance to users of the University’s career management system (Handshake).

Leadership Team Duties:

  • Cultivate grants / external funding to support CEEC programing and activities.
  • Assist Director with department budgets, grants, and operations.
  • Explore and evaluate additional opportunities for employers to connect with students such as mock interviews, information tables, information sessions, classroom presentations, etc.
  • Represent the CEEC and University in various capacities both on and off campus

Miscellaneous:

  • Staff front desk occasionally; create welcoming environment for visitors including students, alumni, faculty, staff, employers, and other stakeholders. Respond to inquiries via phone and email.
  • Provide backup support for career fairs, events, service learning, and prior learning assessment.  Support events including print/digital materials, invitations, promotional items, registrations, correspondence, set-up/clean-up, and event execution.
  • Contribute to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; explore new opportunities to enhance the services of the department; help others accomplish related job results as and where needed.
  • Occasionally on weekends or in the evenings as necessary.  Some local travel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Primary Contacts:  Director, assistant directors, coordinators, students, prospective students, parents/families, faculty, staff, employers, and other members of the University community.

Supervision Exercised:  Potential for one co-op student.  May direct routine tasks and activities of coordinators, assistant directors, CEEC co-op(s), and student workers.

Supervision Received:  Works toward a previously defined objective with little supervision and uses a wide range of procedures; plans and arranges own work referring unusual cases to the Director.

Qualifications

Education:  Master’s degree in related field required.

Experience:  Four (4) or more years of related experience required; 5 or more years of related experience preferred.  Assistantships and other related roles may count toward total experience. Demonstrated ability and commitment to creating a culture of belonging in the workplace.

Specialized Training:  Proficient in use of Microsoft Office.  University systems, CARS, Handshake, and student software preferred.
