The Director of Choral Activities at Mount St. Joseph University plays a pivotal role in shaping the musical and cultural life of the campus. This dynamic position requires a passionate and collaborative music professional to lead our vocal ensembles, energize student participation, and cultivate relationships within the university and broader musical community. The Choral Director will direct the MSJ University Singers, Voices of Gold, and Chamber Singers, contribute to the academic mission through teaching, and help build a vibrant, inclusive community through music.

 

Key Responsibilities:
Direct and Develop Ensembles:

  • Lead all choral ensembles with musical excellence and creative vision, planning and conducting rehearsals and performances throughout the academic year.

Recruitment and Outreach:

  • Engage in active recruitment by building strong relationships with area high school choir directors and collaborating with the Office of Admission to attract talented singers.

Performance Coordination:

  • Organize and conduct choir performances at key university events, including Baccalaureate Mass, academic convocations, and seasonal concerts.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Director of Theatre Arts to create and showcase student talent through dynamic, interdisciplinary performances throughout the academic year—bringing together the power of voice, music, and stage to enrich the cultural fabric of the university.

Campus Ministry Partnership:

  • Collaborate with Campus Ministry to select, rehearse, and perform appropriate music for campus liturgies and spiritual events.

Academic Instruction & Advising:

  • Teach assigned music program courses, advise students in the department, and serve on appropriate committees, contributing to the academic life of the university.

On-Campus Engagement:

  • Design and implement campus-wide recruitment initiatives to elevate awareness and participation in choral opportunities. Engage campus through performances at games and events, pop-up performances, and collaborations with other MSJ Renaissance arts groups.

Administrative and Team Responsibilities:

  • Support departmental and institutional goals through administrative duties, service on university committees, and supervision of student co-ops (as available).

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Contribute to the division and university’s success by being responsive to evolving needs and embracing opportunities to enhance our services and impact.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in Music, Music Education, Choral Conducting, or related field

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of choral directing experience at the secondary or collegiate level, with demonstrated success in recruitment and performance

Specialized Training:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with music notation software and audio tools preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for recruitment and performances
