Purpose: The Financial Aid Counselor will process and review application for financial aid (FAFSA); performs necessary adjustments to student aid packaging to align with both federal student aid guidelines and university policy; evaluates student aid appeals including, Satisfactory Academic Progress, special circumstance, and dependency overrides; adjusts student aid utilizing professional judgement adhering to university and federal guidelines; counsels students and their families regarding state, federal, university, and private funding options; prepares student aid account data utilizing data and systems to identify specific patterns to aid in the improvement of office process efficiency; provides information on federal, state, and private financial aid in a community setting to local high schools and relative community partners to increase student financial education and awareness; maintains relationships with other affiliated departments to facilitate student success. Will have responsibilities to complete the backend processing of financial aid programs such as aid eligibility, loan processing and grant reimbursement.

Duties:

  • Serves as primary point of contact for current and prospective students and families
  • Counsels and advises students about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, aid programs, costs, and indebtedness
  • Uses clear and understandable communication with students, parents, and potential students regarding financial aid counseling
  • Assists with the packaging of federal aid, State of Ohio aid, and institutional scholarships, grants, and loans
  • Conducts verification review for selected students according to federal regulations
  • Responsible for awarding, disbursing, and reconciliation of all aid programs
  • Notifies students of changes in eligibility of awards and alternatives to amend the situation
  • Uses enhanced internal and external communication systems to inform students and parents about financial aid awards and departments policies and procedures, such as email or texting platforms
  • Ensures compliance with all financial aid policies, procedures and regulations when reviewing financial aid applications; exercise judgment when interpreting federal and state regulations for specific student situations
  • Maintains professional connections in state and national financial aid organizations
  • Participates with presentations of financial aid related issues
  • Assists team members when necessary to enable the success of the department.
  • Knowledge of Federal Title IV awards and regulations as well as FERPA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Contributes to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the division; helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience: Experience in a Higher Education environment is desirable but not necessary

Specialized Training: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs and any CRM or Information System such as Jenzabar (can also include licenses, certificates, driver’s license, etc.)

Work Environment, Physical Demands: Multiple service hours; computer data input; multiple concurrent tasks with service interruptions; extensive customer contact; strict confidentiality; detailed work.
