Summary
The Assistant Dean of Students is a key member of the Dean of Students (DOS) team as they coordinate cross-functional efforts related to student crises, student/parental concerns, emergency needs, and student outreach. The Assistant Dean of Students reports directly to the Associate Dean of Students. This role supports the needs of all students, with an emphasis on residential students. The Assistant Dean of Students will support students facing various crises and challenges, including mental health issues, academic difficulties, and adjustment problems. The Assistant Dean also advises faculty and staff on student success concerns, represents the office at campus events, and serves on-call duty. The Assistant Dean is expected to maintain sound policies and practices that are compliant with relevant laws and guidance documents and inform senior administration of critical incidents. The successful candidate will be student-centered and passionate about fostering student growth, learning, and success. Job Description
Essential Duties:
- Coordinate the Student Emergency Support case management in partnership with six departments across all Miami campuses.
- Act as a liaison with campus partners, community members, and parents seeking support from the Office of the Dean of Students. Manage a caseload and maintain frequent student contact to address challenges related to physical or mental health, finances, and social adjustment, utilizing various interventions, referrals, and follow-up resources. Collaborate with other DOS team members to enhance the office's visibility, training, and outreach. A core responsibility of the Assistant Dean is to advance the office's mission of fostering student advocacy, support, and care. May serve as a member of the core CARE Team (Student of Concern Response Team).
- Coordinate and manage student of concern cases through the full support cycle, working with the Associate Dean of Students and CARE team members to develop individualized intervention plans and conduct appropriate follow up including connecting the impacted/concerned student(s) to campus or community resources.
- Provide guidance to and collaborate with campus partners engaged in student support to ensure continuity of care.
- Review and maintain accurate case records in Maxient.
- Coordinate the initial and return phases of the medical withdrawal process (conduct form review and case creation utilizing the Maxient case management system); and provide student consultation sessions when requested.
- Assist in coordination of the office assessment plan, incorporating departmental, divisional, and University outcomes, and reporting data as assigned.
- Participate in the Office of the Dean of Students outreach efforts and co-facilitate office training programs.
- Respond to walk-in and phone calls for student advocacy.
- Assist with larger special event functions from the Division of Student Life.
- Represent the ODOS at various evening and weekend events throughout the academic year.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, social work, or another appropriate field of graduate study.
- By the position start date, at least three years of post-graduate professional experience in a student affairs functional area in higher education, or related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three to five years of experience working within a division of student affairs, preferably with some experience in a DOS office, or/and in a case management capacity.
- Experience with providing administrative oversight and supervision.
- On-call crisis response experience.
- Documented record of initiating proactive strategies that enhance retention and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed. Ability to work on-call hours. ?
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws such as Title IX, Clery Act, Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (Campus SaVE) Act, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Excellent interpersonal communication, crisis response, and conflict management skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to balance multiple obligations in an efficient and effective way, remain professional and compassionate during emotionally charged situations, and work as an integral member of a supportive team.
- Computer literacy skills, specifically using Maxient software.
- Strong ability to document, track, and manage cases through to resolution.
- A demonstrated understanding of conduct and alternative dispute resolution (mediation, restorative justice, and/or facilitated dialogue) processes.
