Job Description Summary
The Learning Specialist/Coordinator is responsible for implementing academic support and services for students in the areas of effective learning strategies and to offer leadership and coordination of at least one of our support initiatives (e.g. teaching, Supplemental Instruction, virtual resources). As a Learning Specialist the position provides direct service to students through individualized academic counseling with a focus on learning, time management, and organization strategies; advising and mentoring to special student populations; instruction through online and face-to-face support courses; content specific tutoring; college transitions; navigating the university system; and self-advocacy. As a Coordinator the position administers, coordinates, monitors, and assesses a center-wide program and/or initiative. Coordination could include supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate staff. This is a full-time, 11-month position.


Job Description

Learning Specialist 50%

  • Provide individual academic counseling/coaching for students experiencing academic difficulty.
  • Teach study strategies courses and other support courses as needed.
  • Provide advising and mentoring to students in the Scholastic Enhancement Program and the Access Fellows Program.
  • Present to various constituencies on effective learning strategies and/or services provided through the Rinella Learning Center
  • Serve as student advocate and assist in resolving student concerns.
  • Document all contacts with students including letters, telephone calls, conferences, consultations, etc.

 

Coordinator 40%

  • Manage daily operations for one or more office wide support initiatives.  This includes troubleshooting and resolving conflicts.
  • Where appropriate, hire, train, and supervise student staff.
  • Develop and implement assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness of our programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Rinella Learning Center and other university offices (specifically faculty engaged with one of our initiatives and the Registrar’s Office as necessary).
  • Prepare reports pertaining to initiatives.

 

Other 10%    

  • Participate in professional and campus activities and research related to academic support and learning strategies.
  • Consult and meet with families, university professionals, and mental health/medical professionals when necessary.
  • Consult with and advise university staff and faculty on issues related to student academic support and students with unique learning challenges.
  • Develop and implement materials on learning/study strategies and other topics relevant to student learning needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in education, educational psychology, student affairs, counseling, social work, or related field AND two years of relevant experience. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with coaching or counseling
  • Experience with supervision
  • Knowledge of college student development and effective learning strategies
  • Strong skills to effectively communicate
  • A service orientation and a commitment to working in a team
  • Facility with new and changing technologies
