Job Description
The Miami University College of Arts and Science (CAS) invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean. The primary responsibility of this role is to direct the CAS Academic Advising Office and ensure student success in the undergraduate majors and programs in the division. The Assistant Dean reports to the Dean of CAS.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising & Registration: Oversee and coordinate comprehensive academic advising and registration processes for CAS majors, ensuring student success.
  • Team Leadership: Lead the recruitment, training, and ongoing professional development of a team of 10 academic advisors and support staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Advisor Support: Provide training and resources for lead departmental advisors and faculty advisors, and actively participate in university-level committees focused on enhancing academic advising practices.
  • Communication: Coordinate communications to students regarding advising and registration, ensuring clarity and accessibility of information.
  • Student Recruitment Strategy: Develop and implement innovative strategies for new student recruitment. Organize engaging admissions events, including open houses, panels, and tours.
  • Curriculum: Serve as an ex-officio member of the CAS curriculum committee, consulting on program changes and maintaining the curricula for all majors, minors, co-majors, and certificates within CAS.
  • Enrollment Management: Collaborate with departments to effectively manage enrollments and course offerings, ensuring alignment with student needs and institutional goals.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize relevant online systems and tools to support academic advising.
  • Orientation & Transition Support: Oversee new student orientation and coordinate advising and registration processes for transfer and international students, ensuring a smooth transition to our academic community.
  • Student Advocacy: Assist students through various processes, including academic petitions and grievances, providing support for unique academic challenges they may encounter.

The College of Arts and Science is the centerpiece of liberal arts education at Miami University and the largest academic division on campus. As such, the College encompasses a rich diversity of disciplinary opportunities and experiences across the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, languages, mathematics/data science, and interdisciplinary programs. CAS is home to over 20 departments and over 50  majors for undergraduate study. CAS offers three undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, and the Bachelor of Science.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Required: Master’s degree; ten years of academic advising experience with increasing responsibilities; experience working on committees; prior training responsibilities; demonstrated large group presentation skills; strong communication skills; working with diverse student populations, including international students; strong computer skills.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with fifteen or more years of academic advising, teaching experience; experience working with admissions and student success; familiarity with curriculum approval processes.
