Job Description Summary

Job Description
The Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education will drive success on key strategic goals related to student success, undergraduate curriculum, and learning and will help articulate new priorities and strategic goals to continuously improve all aspects of Miami. As a member of the Provost and Executive Vice President's leadership team, the Associate Provost serves as the campus-wide expert and leader for undergraduate education and promotes excellence in all areas of undergraduate education.

The units that will report to the Associate Provost include: the Howe Center for Writing Excellence, the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the Office of Liberal Education, the Honors College, the Office of Research for Undergraduates, Academic Integrity, and the Undergraduate Academic Advising Council.

The Associate Provost will work collaboratively with these units as well as Miami’s Academic Deans, the Senior Associate Provost, the Dean of Students, the Vice President for Student Life, and student success personnel in the division of Enrollment Management and Student Success in order to:

Lead Strategic Curricular Innovation and Implementation:

  • Be a visible leader and advocate for undergraduate education and student success within the University and nationally.
  • Strategically coordinate efforts to innovate the University’s campus-wide undergraduate programs, including General Education, first-year advising, the campus-wide honors program, and undergraduate research opportunities.
  • Understand and oversee curricular initiatives with the Ohio Department of Higher Education relating to student success;
  • Ensure policies, practices, and initiatives are aligned with promising/best practices nationally for top-ranked undergraduate-focused liberal arts institutions.
  • Work closely with leaders, faculty, and staff in each academic unit to define and support strategic policies, practices, and curricula related to undergraduate education and advising.
  • Work with the Office of Liberal Education and other stakeholders (including the University Senate) to innovate, deliver, and assess the University’s General Education program (the Miami Plan).
  • Work with faculty to develop and support innovative interdisciplinary academic programs.
  • Support efforts to enhance Miami’s nationally ranked Honors College (6th in the country by College Transitions).
  • Support the Office of Academic Integrity and serve as the final arbiter of appeals for any undergraduate disciplinary or academic process.

 

Support Teaching Excellence:

  • Work with leaders of faculty development programs (in the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Howe Center for Writing Excellence, the Office of Liberal Education, and eLearning) to support faculty and advocate for teaching excellence, building on Miami’s proven record of enacting the teacher/scholar model.

 

Expand Undergraduate Research, Experiential Learning, and Other High-Impact Practices:

  • Work with the Office of Research for Undergraduates and the Honors College to expand undergraduate research opportunities and other high-impact practices.
  • Collaboratively implement compelling degree programs and initiatives that make Miami a national destination for tuition-paying students.

 

Support Recruitment, Retention, and Advising Efforts:

  • Work with faculty and professional advisors to ensure that Miami’s students receive learnercentered advising and support.
  • Work with campus partners to enact a vision to grow enrollment of diverse student populations and retain those students by offering them engaged learning in a supportive community.
  • Judiciously engage predictive analytics for the design, assessment, and implementation of student success programs and activities, using such tools ethically and strategically in service of Miami's goals and proven strengths in teaching and learning.
  • Coordinate with Student Life to maintain Miami’s national reputation for the residential undergraduate student experience on the Oxford campus, and keep parents and families frequently updated on issues of interest.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Management to support effective recruitment, marketing, and cultivation of prospective students.
  • Collaborate with Student Life and Student Success to effectively support and engage students through graduation and beyond.

The Associate Provost will collaborate with the leadership of all reporting units, Miami’s Academic Deans, the Senior Associate Provost, the Dean of Students, the Vice President for Student Life, and student success personnel in the division of Enrollment Management and Student Success. The person will also collaborate with and support leaders on Regional Campuses (Hamilton, Middletown, and Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester).

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Miami seeks an exceptional leader with a strong academic record; a proven ability to collaborate across silos with university leaders, faculty, staff, and students; and an ability to collaboratively create strategic plans and implement them. The Associate Provost will possess significant leadership experience as it relates to student success initiatives, retention, and undergraduate curriculum. The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in one of Miami’s general fields of study and have a history of research and scholarship to be eligible for appointment as a full professor or professor of practice within an academic unit of the University.
  • Consideration may be given to candidates demonstrating the following attributes:

    • Experience working with professionals in enrollment management and student life units;
    • A deep understanding of the landscape of higher education with engagement and connection to national initiatives and trends related to undergraduate education;
    • Demonstrated ability to foster innovation in teaching pedagogy and curriculum design;
    • Leadership in undergraduate curriculum development, general education, and academic policy;
    • Ability to foster a culture of high ethical standards and effective collaborative practices in undergraduate education, including exceptional fiduciary skills;
    • A strong advocate and record of success in advancing transformational and inclusive excellence;
    • Skill and comfort with data and its use in tracking success;
    • A deep understanding and appreciation of shared governance;
    • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; and
    • An innovative and entrepreneurial mindset, with the agility to bring new ideas to fruition in a timely fashion.
